Our National Drink!

Right, well it's naw exactly tap water… but it's pretty close for sure! I think I probably knew about Irn-Bru before I even knew what tea was.

You'll find Irn-Bru in pretty much every shop you visit aroon Scotland. It's been a part of Scottish life fur generations, since 1901, tae be exact.

Every second, aboot 20 cans of Irn-Bru are sold aroon Scotland. That means by the time you finish reading this paragraph, hunners of cans have already been opened somewhere between Glasgow, Dundee, and a builder’s van parked outside Greggs.

Mad ain't it?

These days you can find Irn-Bru in a few different versions. There's the Original Irn-Bru, Diet Irn-Bru, Irn-Bru XTRA, and Irn-Bru 1901, which is meant tae taste more like the old-school recipe.

But let's be honest… no matter how many versions they bring out, the original is still the one most Scots reach for. Except me — I prefer the XTRA version!

My Dirty Little Addiction!

Man, I have a love-hate relationship with this bloody drink! I proper LOVE it and drink it almost every single day. But deep doon I know this thing is probably murdering my gut.

Let's be honest though… most of the stuff we eat and drink these days is probably trying to give us cancer or some other shite anyway.

But… I cannae help masel!

I can easily sink 2–3 litres a day of this stuff. And I mean easily. I’ve done it many times. I can drink Irn-Bru easier than I can drink water, and that’s naw even a joke.

I’ve tried tae cut doon, but it’s bloody impossible. It’s like a drug addiction. I’ve even tried cutting it oot while doing fasting. The longest I lasted was aboot 20 days.

Then the cravings start creeping back in… then the cycle starts again!

And I kid you not — I have a glass sitting here right now while I’m writing this.

Tesco didn’t have the XTRA version this time, so I had tae grab Diet Irn-Bru instead. I don’t actually mind the diet stuff — most of ma life it’s been Diet anyway. I switched tae XTRA a few years back though, because if I’m being honest, it tastes a wee bit better.

You Foreign Lot!

I see you — the YouTube reactions and reviews of Scottish food and drink.

You always have tae try oor Irn-Bru, and it’s always the same pish ye come out with. “It tastes a bit like cream soda.” Or “it tastes like bubblegum.”

What sort of fucked up taste buds have you lot got?

Now don’t get me wrong, I like a cream soda as well… but fuck me. It tastes nuffin like cream soda.

To be honest though, I probably couldn’t explain the taste maself either. It’s one of those drinks where you just shrug and say, “Aye… it tastes like Irn-Bru.”

And that’s about as close as anyone’s ever got..

The “Real Tap Water” Joke

Right, let's talk about the “Real Tap Water” joke, because that's where the title of this post comes from.

In Scotland people always joke that Irn-Bru is basically our real tap water. Everywhere you look, someone’s drinking it.

You'll see builders cracking open a can at 7 in the morning, football fans swigging it before the match, and kids walking hame from the shop with a bottle that's nearly as big as they are.

It's just always been there. Part of everyday life.

Technically speaking it's mostly water anyway. Water, sugar, caffeine, and whatever mysterious flavouring they use that nobody on earth seems able to explain.

So when folk say Irn-Bru is basically Scotland's real tap water… they're maybe not that far off.

That's ma story anyway, and I'm sticking tae it.

The Legendary Irn-Bru Adverts

Another thing Irn-Bru has always been famous for is its adverts.

If you grew up in Scotland, you’ll probably remember at least a few of them. They’ve always been a bit cheeky and usually funny as hell.

One of the most famous slogans was:

“Made in Scotland from girders.”

Which, if you’ve ever tasted Irn-Bru, almost sounds believable.

Over the years they've had adverts aboot everything from snowmen stealing Irn-Bru, tae parodying Hollywood films, tae winding up pretty much everybody at some point.

Some of them were even banned for being a wee bit too cheeky.

But that's part of the charm. The adverts never tried to be posh or polished — they leaned right into Scottish humour.

And somehow that just made Irn-Bru feel even more Scottish.

If you've never seen the adverts, get in aboot Youtube and have a look. They're brilliant.

I cannae buy just One!

You know what's funny? I cannae just buy one 2-litre bottle of Irn-Bru. You have tae buy two, and I'll tell yae why.

On several occasions I've came away with just one bottle, took it hame, opened it up, heard that nice fizzzz…

Poured that bad boy into a glass, took a swally and BAM! — over-gassed or some shite. Tastes all funny.

So that's it. Game over. That bottle's ruined.

Which is exactly why you always need a backup bottle sitting in the fridge.

Because if that first bottle tastes off, you’re no sitting there drinking water like some sort of lunatic. You're opening the second one.

The Hangover Cure Legend

Alright, let's talk about the Hangover Cure Legend.

You know what's funny? Every single time I've ever had a hangover, the first thing I would do is open a can of Irn-Bru. (I don't drink noo, by the way!)

But honestly, if you grew up in Scotland, you’ll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Night out the night before, feeling like absolute death the next morning… head pounding, stomach doing somersaults, questioning every life decision you've ever made.

Then ye get yersel an Irn-Bru.

And somehow… it actually helps.

Maybe it's the sugar. Maybe it's the caffeine. Maybe it's just pure psychological nonsense. But for whatever reason, that cold can of Irn-Bru seems to bring a dying Scotsman back to life. Well, that and a fry-up!

It's practically folk medicine at this point.

And that's the thing about Irn-Bru.

Naebody can really explain the flavour, naebody can explain why it fixes a hangover, and naebody can explain why half the country seems addicted to it.

But if you grew up in Scotland…

you probably wouldn't have it any other way.

That's ma story about Irn-Bru. It's a bit of a love-hate relationship, but am sticking with it.

I have nae idea why I wrote this, but here we are.

Oh and by the way, check out the adverts here

AG-Barr, if you read this. I deserve a full year's supply of Irn-Bru, Diet or XTRA, I ain't too fussy. A think a deserve it with the amount of Bru I swally.

Catch ye!
